| WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?
How does hypnotherapy help? Hypnotherapy enables you to relax and switch off unwanted thoughts and feelings. Hypnotherapy enables you to focus your attention
more effectively on your goals. How is someone hypnotised? Simply by the voice of the hypnotherapist. Sometimes I might hold a client's hand, but otherwise no physical contact is involved. How would I feel in a hypnotic trance? The best way to understand what Hypnotherapy is like is to ask someone who has experienced it. On coming out of hypnotic trance, my clients say things like: "I felt more relaxed than I have been for many years." "I didn't realise how tense I had been previously." "I was as relaxed as if I was asleep- yet I could hear every word you said." "I felt I could have snapped out of it at any time, if I had wanted to." "It was so enjoyable, I didn't want to come back." "It was like a very deep meditation." "It was so easy." "I feel really positive now!" Can anyone be hypnotised? In my own hypnotherapy practice I can hypnotise about 98% of people. Is it guaranteed? I can guarantee to work to the best of my ability to help you, and to let you know if I don't think I can help you. However, no Hypnotherapist can guarantee to solve your problems, because that depends on your full commitment and cooperation. As the old saying goes, "You can take a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink". Is hypnotherapy ever scary? For the so-called "deep trance subjects" hypnosis can feel strange at first. But these are the very people who can benefit the most from hypnotherapy. Can hypnosis be misused? Is it always safe? Many therapists, in a well-meaning attempt to reassure potential clients, claim that hypnotherapy is always safe. The truth is that it is only safe if the hypnotherapist is competent and ethical. This emphasises the importance of consulting a therapist who has trained and registered with reputable professional bodies, and who can be vouched for by reputable colleagues. How do you reassure anxious clients? I allow, or even encourage, them to bring a relative or friend to sit with them during the session. Also I belong to the National Register of Hypnotherapists and Psychotherapists (NRHP), and the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)- both these professional bodies have Codes of Conduct and complaints procedures. I am associated with colleagues who also have a good reputation both locally and further afield. |
