Helping people to lose weight is one of my main specialities. Most of my weight loss hypnotherapy clients have already tried and failed repeatedly with other methods, before consulting me. Losing weight rapidly with extreme diets can be quite easy- it’s keeping the weight off that’s often much more difficult. That’s because dieting works only on your body. It does nothing for the underlying causes of overeating, which are almost always in the mind. Of course, results will vary from person to person as with any therapy. In my experience the difference between success and failure is mostly down to the client’s level of motivation, which is why no therapist or doctor can ever guarantee success.
There is good scientific backing for the use of hypnosis to assist weight loss. Professor Irving Kirsch and his colleagues, as reported in the Oxford Handbook of Hypnosis Theory Research and Practice reports that a programme using hypnosis combined with cognitive-behavioural methods was more effective than if cognitive behavioural therapy was used on its own.
