 My main speciality is providing hypnotherapy for anxiety in its many forms, such as general anxiety and lack of confidence, anxiety about public speaking, social phobia, driving test anxiety and help for nervous drivers generally, and specific phobias such as fear of dogs, spiders, heights, and being sick.

WHAT IS ANXIETY?

Anxiety is an underlying sense of being at risk or in danger, similar to what a cat feels when it is on another cat’s territory. Anxiety means being constantly alert for any threats, poised to react instantly to any danger. Reactions include flight, fight, and freezing. Animals only feel anxious when they are in danger of physical attack. Humans can be anxious in a much wider range of situations. This is firstly because our greater intelligence enables us to imagine dangers, even highly unlikely possibilities. Secondly, because we are social creatures, being ridiculed or disliked can feel as bad as being physically hurt. Anxiety is often a problem when it interferes with a specific goal, such as public speaking or passing the driving test.

WHAT IS A PANIC ATTACK?

WHAT IS A PHOBIA?

A phobia is anxiety or even panic caused by a very specific thing, situation, or activity. There are potentially as many phobias as there are things and situations in the World. It is therefore pointless to learn long lists of phobias, since every client’s experience of phobia is different anyway. However, the common phobias are social phobia (including fear of public speaking and performance), agoraphobia (fear of open spaces), and claustrophobia (fear of being trapped in small spaces). The only cure for phobia is to spend enough time in the feared situation that your fear dies down and disappears. A gradual approach is best- hypnotherapy enable you to control your fear sufficiently to face the situation with minimal distress.

WHAT IS INSOMNIA?

Insomnia means lack of sleep- an increasingly common problem. I’ve helped many people to sleep better, often after years of sleeplessness and exhaustion. I will generally begin by teaching you how to relax and immediately
calm your emotions. When the body calms down, the mind follows. A calm mind can easily dismiss irrational ideas. Counselling becomes an effective help for anxiety once the paralysing fear has been controlled. When you are able to control your fear, you can stay with anything you previously feared until you have got used to it. It’s important to tackle your fears in a systematic way, beginning with the least threatening and working your way up to the most threatening at a manageable pace. Of course, results will vary from person to person as with any therapy. In my experience the difference between success and failure is mostly down to the client’s level of motivation, which is why no therapist or doctor can ever guarantee success.
