Psychosomatic problems occur when the mind affects the body, causing physical symptoms. A great many physical symptoms may be caused by the mind, rather than by physical disease. These can include itching and skin rashes, muscular aches, severe pain, and digestive problems such as vomiting and diarrhoea. And even where symptoms have a definite physical cause, the amount of suffering is affected by the way we think about them.
Chronic pain can often be substantially improved by hypnotherapy, even when the pain originated with a physical injury or illness. This is because all pain has both mental and physical components. Therapy can make the pain easier to live with, and enable reduction in the use of painkillers. Hypnotherapy for back pain is most often requested, but I’ve also helped with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), chronic itching, and other complaints.
Hypnosis can help in two ways. Firstly, by treating the underlying emotional problem. Many clients do not feel emotionally disturbed, but this is simply because their emotions have become entirely transformed into physical symptoms. Hypnotherapy can also help by directly changing the experience of symptoms, for instance by calming skin irritation. The function of internal organs, such as the intestines, can be improved by direct and indirect suggestion. Of course, results will vary from person to person as with any therapy. In my experience the difference between success and failure is mostly down to the client’s level of motivation, which is why no therapist or doctor can ever guarantee success.
Medical examination by your GP or hospital consultant is essential before beginning hypnotherapy for pain or other physical problems. Your doctors need to ensure that the pain is not a warning signal of some serious underlying problem needing urgent treatment. I would not want you to ignore such a warning sign due to being more physically comfortable, if the underlying illness still needs treatment. Once your doctors have confirmed the cause of your symptoms, hypnotherapy treatment can begin.
