On my home page here I summarise my hypnotherapy training. Here are more details.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO CHECK A HYPNOTHERAPIST’S HYPNOTHERAPY TRAINING.
At present, neither hypnotherapy, psychotherapy or counselling are legally-controlled professions. This means that ANYONE can call himself a hypnotherapist or psychotherapist or counsellor, even if he has no training whatsoever! Likewise, ANYONE can set up a hypnotherapy training school and charge large amounts of money for inadequate training. So on this page I give full details of the extensive training that I have undertaken, and of the institutions where I have trained.
MY HYPNOTHERAPY TRAINING WITH NATIONAL COLLEGE OF HYPNOSIS AND PSYCHOTHERAPY.
My hypnotherapy training began with this College from 1987 to 1993. I continue to attend their conferences and ongoing courses for experienced practitioners.
I hold the National College’s “Advanced Diploma in Hypno-Psychotherapy.” The total study time for this course is about 1,800 hours. Due to its high standards of training, the National College is accredited by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy, the European Association for Psychotherapy, the European Association for Hypno-Psychotherapy, the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council, and the National Council for Hypnotherapy.
MY HYPNOTHERAPY TRAINING WITH MILTON H. ERICKSON FOUNDATION.
This organisation, based in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, continues the work of Dr Milton Erickson, one of the world’s most famous hypnotists. In the 1990s I attended their “Phoenix Intensive” training course, studying more advanced hypnosis techniques. My tutor was Dr Brent Geary, who had learned hypnotherapy from Dr Erickson himself. Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), the form of Counselling I mainly practice, is largely based on the work of Dr Erickson.
My hypnotherapy training was enhanced by deep background knowledge of psychology. In the late 1990s I obtained my BSc (Hons) degree in psychology, learning more about the workings and development of the human mind. In 2000-2002 I also completed the Diploma in Counselling course, during which I worked in the counselling services of Plymouth MIND and Plymouth College of Art and Design.
MY HYPNOTHERAPY TRAINING WITH HUMAN GIVENS COLLEGE
My hypnotherapy training continued with the Human Givens College. This college supplies training in Solution Focused Brief Therapy. I have attended several of their courses, which teach rapid and effective psychotherapy techniques.
This institute in Exeter awarded me their Certificate in Psychotherapy Supervision in 2005. “Supervision” is the system whereby qualified counsellors and psychotherapists continue to enhance their practice by reviewing cases and therapy methods in confidential discussions. This training was run by Julie Hewson, a trainer and therapist who has been called upon by corporate clients from all over Britain and Europe.
Other people I have learned from include prominent hypnotherapists like Adam Eason, who was himself taught by Richard Bandler (the founder of Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP) and by the “self-help guru” Anthony Robbins.
