How Does Hypnosis Work?

To understand how does hypnosis work we need to know that the mind has different parts or levels. When we think on a “conscious” level, we know what we are thinking and can generally work out why we think that way. But when we think on the “unconscious” or “subconscious” level we are not always aware of those thoughts, and therefore cannot know why we think them. This unconscious mind is almost always more powerful than the conscious mind.

WE ALL KNOW THAT WE HAVE AN UNCONSCIOUS MIND

Almost everyone knows this from experience even if they’ve never read a word about psychology. We’ve all had the experience of wanting to do one thing, but finding ourselves doing the opposite. It’s not that we’re physically unable- it’s just that “our brain won’t let us!”

Likewise, most of us have had the experience of being very “moved” emotionally by something, maybe a piece of music. We don’t know why it affects us- it just does.

Again, to understand how does hypnosis work it can help to remember our own experiences in our teens or early adult life. Most of us have “fallen in love” at least once in our lives. We do not analyse the other person, making lists of their good points and bad points, before deciding we shall fall in love with them. It just happens, often instantly before we’ve had any chance to really get to know them.

DOES HYPNOSIS WORK ON THE UNCONSCIOUS MIND?

So can you now begin to answer the question of how does hypnosis work? Clearly it works upon the unconscious levels of the mind, in which our most powerful motivations and beliefs are stored- this includes of course our self-belief. Hypnosis is one means of accessing this level and making changes in the way we think.

This includes changing our beliefs about ourselves. Another answer to the question of “how does hypnosis work?” would be that hypnosis can adjust the “filters” in our minds. We cannot remember everything or pay attention to everything, so we have a mental filter that only lets us notice and remember certain things. So for instance, a depressive person notices and remembers negative experiences very easily, but forgets positive experiences. By adjusting this “filter” the whole outlook on life is transformed.

WHY CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES STAY WITH US.

The unconscious minds of children are much more “open” than those of adults, because their “conscious” minds are less developed, and it’s the conscious mind that tends to “close off” the unconscious mind. So all sorts of bad ideas can get programmed into us as children, and then remain with us in adult life even though our circumstances are now totally different.

HOW HYPNOSIS IS INDUCED

There are many methods of inducing hypnosis. I normally use a talking method, which does involve any sudden moves or physical contact. It is nothing like what you might see in a stage show. Deep hypnotic trance is not necessary- you will still be aware of where you are and what you’re doing, and will never be made to do anything silly.
